Rene Lalique: An Introduction

René Lalique : introduction

Here’s a brief introduction to René Lalique, my personal favorite among Art Nouveau jewelry designers.

René Lalique is celebrated as one of the most important jewelry designers of the French Art Nouveau movement.

While drawing inspiration from the core themes of Art Nouveau—fauna and flora, including peacocks, various insects, and sometimes a fantastical bestiary—he innovated by using materials rarely employed in jewelry at the time. These included glass, enamel, leather, horn, and mother-of-pearl, often favoring semi-precious stones over precious ones.

His expertise in modeling allowed him to introduce volume into jewelry design.

Lalique sketched his designs and entrusted their realization to a carefully selected team of chasers, sculptors, and enamelers.

But Lalique didn’t stop at designing unique pieces; he also built a factory in Wingen-sur-Moder to produce his designs on a larger scale. He patented numerous manufacturing techniques, such as pressed-molded glass and double-layered glass.

He also created groundbreaking aesthetic effects, including Lalique satin finishes and opalescent glass.
