Coquelicot : la mauvaise herbe ?

The poppy, often considered a weed, is an annual herbaceous plant.

Common in freshly plowed soils from spring, it is easily recognized by the bright red color of its flowers, which often form vast, colorful stretches visible from a distance.

Traditionally, the poppy is seen as a symbol of freedom and adaptability, as well as determination and resilience.

In antiquity, it was associated with Demeter, the goddess of fertility, and its properties linked it to the notion of eternal sleep and oblivion, thus echoing Morpheus, the god of dreams in Greek mythology.

The term "poppy" originally comes from "coquelicoq" (1545), a variant of the old French "coquerico," which mimics the rooster's crow. This name refers to the red color of the flowers, reminiscent of a rooster's comb.

Poppies are also found in pink, white, and yellow.

In the language of flowers, each shade of poppy carries a distinct meaning.

Red symbolizes pride, the desire for redemption, and simplicity, offering comfort and encouragement.

White poppies suggest sadness and the need for consolation.

Yellow varieties are associated with success and are perfect for celebrating a promotion or graduation.

Pink poppies, on the other hand, represent serenity.

Finally, in French folklore, poppy anniversaries celebrate eight years of marriage.
